Wamuchomba Questions Sifuna’s Political Popularity, Challenges Supporters to Prove They Have Votes

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has ignited an intriguing political conversation surrounding Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s growing political influence after revealing the extraordinary online reception of her congratulatory message to the senator following the establishment of his political party.

Wamuchomba disclosed that her Facebook post celebrating Sifuna had attracted an impressive 630,000 views and reached more than two million people within just 24 hours.

The post also generated approximately 60,000 engagements, 73 shares and nearly 1,000 net followers, demonstrating the enormous public interest surrounding the Nairobi senator’s emerging political vehicle.

However, the outspoken legislator has challenged Sifuna’s supporters to establish whether the overwhelming online enthusiasm represents genuine electoral strength or merely social media excitement.

She wants to know whether the people enthusiastically celebrating Sifuna online can translate their digital excitement into actual votes when Kenyans eventually head to the ballot.

Turning her attention to Kiambu County, Wamuchomba highlighted what she described as a worrying backlog of uncollected national identity cards, arguing that political enthusiasm means little when potential voters have not secured the essential documents required to participate in elections.

According to the figures she shared, approximately 37,708 identity cards remained uncollected across Kiambu County as of 2024. Thika Huduma Centre accounted for 11,960, while Juja had more than 2,789, Limuru over 2,000, Kiambu Town 1,045, Gatundu 567 and Githunguri 1,894.

In a humorous but politically charged challenge, Wamuchomba suggested that Sifuna’s supporters could become an even more formidable electoral force if they collected their identity cards and registered as eligible voters.

Her remarks have consequently shifted the conversation from social media popularity to the ultimate political currency: votes.
