Very Soon, We Shall Form Gyampo Survivors – Justice Offei Says Amid Sexual Harassment Controversy

New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Justice Newton Offei has proposed the formation of a pressure group he described as

amid renewed public discussion surrounding allegations involving University of Ghana academic Professor Ransford Gyampo.

In a Facebook post, Offei said the proposed group would seek to provide a platform for women and girls who may have experienced sexual misconduct to speak about their experiences and seek support.

His comments come against the backdrop of renewed controversy surrounding Prof Gyampo. A separate dispute involving Gyampo and University of Ghana colleague Dr George Domfeh led to a widely circulated video of a heated confrontation between the two academics. The university subsequently initiated internal processes to review their conduct under its statutes and academic code of conduct.

The controversy also involved allegations made publicly against Gyampo, which he disputed. His lawyers subsequently demanded a retraction and apology from Domfeh over statements they described as defamatory.

Offei’s proposed pressure group has now added another dimension to the broader discussion, particularly around how allegations of sexual misconduct are handled and whether people who claim to have experienced such conduct have adequate avenues to speak out.

However, the proposal remains a statement by Offei and does not establish the truth of any allegations against Gyampo. The issues surrounding the various claims remain subject to the appropriate legal or institutional processes.

The proposal has generated discussion online, while Prof Gyampo had not, at the time of the report, publicly responded specifically to Offei’s suggestion.
