Chelsea Star Romeo Lavia Finally Breaks Silence on Ghanaian Heritage Rumours After Man United Win.
Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia has addressed growing speculation about his family background after dismissing claims linking him to Ghanaian ancestry.
The 22-year-old Belgian international clarified that he has no Ghanaian heritage, explaining that both of his parents come from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
Lavia made the revelation during an interview with Ghanaian journalist Rahman Osman following Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
According to a report by Pulse Ghana, the midfielder said he had repeatedly come across social media discussions suggesting that he had Ghanaian roots but insisted that the claims were inaccurate.
Lavia Addresses Ghanaian Heritage Speculation
During the interview, Lavia was asked about the online discussions surrounding his ancestry.
Responding to the question, he explained that the rumours were untrue and confirmed that his family background was Congolese.
The midfielder also expressed appreciation for his upbringing, crediting his family for the support and encouragement he received while growing up.
His comments have attracted attention among Ghanaian football supporters, particularly those who had previously discussed the possibility of him having ancestral connections to Ghana.
The clarification also addresses questions surrounding whether the Chelsea midfielder could potentially have qualified to represent Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, through his family background.
Lavia was born in Brussels, Belgium, on January 6, 2004. He began his football development at Belgian club Anderlecht before joining Manchester City’s youth system in 2020.
He later moved to Southampton in 2022, where his performances in the Premier League attracted interest from several major European clubs.
Chelsea eventually secured his services in August 2023 in a deal reportedly worth £58 million.
Despite facing injury setbacks during his time at Stamford Bridge, Lavia has continued working towards establishing himself as an important member of Chelsea’s midfield.
Lavia’s International Football Background
Although his parents are Congolese, Lavia represents Belgium at international level.
He progressed through Belgium’s youth teams before making his senior international debut against Germany in March 2023.
His latest clarification distinguishes his Belgian sporting nationality from his Congolese family heritage.
For Ghanaian supporters who had hoped to see the midfielder represent the Black Stars, his comments provide a direct answer to the speculation that has circulated on social media.
Lavia’s statement makes clear that his family roots are Congolese, rather than Ghanaian.
