“Smashed by Whole Minute” Philimon Kiptoo Makes History in Istanbul With Brutal New Course Record
Kenyan road running star Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba has delivered a masterpiece performance in Turkey, storming to victory at the 48th Istanbul Marathon while smashing the long-standing men’s course record in dominant fashion.
Crossing the finish line at Sultanahmet Square in a staggering 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 44 seconds, Kiptoo completely erased the former course record set back in 2019 by a whole minute.
The Kenyan powerhouse broke away from a tough pack of international athletes along the intercontinental route to seal a memorable victory for Kenya on the world stage.
The grueling 42.195-kilometer race, famously known as the world’s only marathon spanning two continents from Asia into Europe, saw Kiptoo dictate a blistering pace right from the July 15 Martyrs Bridge.
Pushing hard through the final stages, he left his top Ethiopian rivals struggling behind, while fellow countryman Vincent Kipyegon Ronoh secured third place to complete a great day for Kenya.
Kiptoo’s impressive performance not only earned him the champion title but also bagged him top prize money and performance bonuses for setting a historical mark on Turkish soil.
