Ruto Gives Update on KSh3 Billion Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct as Construction Surpasses 50%
President William Ruto has announced significant progress on the construction of the Kenyatta Avenue-Upper Hill Viaduct in Nairobi, revealing that the multibillion-shilling infrastructure project has crossed the halfway mark.
In an update shared on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the Head of State disclosed that work on the KSh3 billion development was now more than 50 per cent complete, with completion targeted for May 2027.
The project involves a one-kilometre elevated dual carriageway expected to improve transport connections between Nairobi’s Central Business District and Upper Hill.
Once operational, the road is expected to provide motorists with an alternative route, ease traffic congestion along Kenyatta Avenue and improve access to Upper Hill, which hosts several major commercial establishments and institutions.
The elevated highway features reinforced concrete pillars designed to support the road structure, with construction involving specialised engineering work.
The latest announcement comes after the project missed its earlier December 2026 completion deadline. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) attributed the delay to complicated structural requirements, particularly the installation of columns and steel components that demand precision and careful execution.
The development has a lengthy construction history, having commenced in September 2020 before stalling for several years amid payment disagreements involving contractors. Work eventually resumed in July 2025.
The viaduct forms part of wider road infrastructure improvements around the capital, including the Valley Road-Kenyatta Avenue, Ngong-Nyerere interchange and Upper Hill-Haile Selassie overpass projects.
The government says the broader infrastructure programme is intended to strengthen Nairobi’s road network, improve connectivity and reduce pressure on heavily used urban transport corridors.
