New York Mayor Secures Trump’s Approval For Visa For Mother Of Slain Ghanaian Teenager
According to a report by Joy News on Sunday November 1, 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reportedly secured the approval of US President Donald Trump for a visa arrangement to enable the mother of a Ghanaian teenager who was fatally shot in the Bronx to travel to the United States.
The development is expected to bring some relief to the grieving family as they seek an opportunity to reunite following the tragic death of the teenager, whose killing has attracted attention in both Ghana and the United States.
Mayor Mamdani made the announcement on Saturday, October 31, following a telephone conversation with President Trump. He said the US President had agreed to facilitate the visa immediately to allow the mother to travel from Ghana and bid farewell to her son.
In announcing the decision, Mamdani expressed sympathy for the bereaved family, stressing that no parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child, particularly from thousands of miles away.
Javits Frimpong was reportedly shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while walking to school in the Claremont neighbourhood of the Bronx.
The 15-year-old, who was a student at DreamYard Preparatory School, was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital by responding police officers but later died from his injuries.
Javits moved from Ghana to the United States in 2025 to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, and pursue a new life.
His father has raised concerns about alleged bullying at school, explaining that the school’s principal had previously informed him that two students were harassing his son and had subsequently been suspended.
However, authorities have not established any connection between the alleged bullying and the fatal shooting.
The New York Police Department is investigating the incident, with reports indicating that officers are searching for suspects believed to be teenagers. No arrests had been announced as of October 31, and the motive for the killing remained unclear.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has welcomed the intervention by President Trump and Mayor Mamdani.
The minister disclosed that Ghanaian officials had been assigned to assist Javits’ mother, identified as Doris Adu Gyamfi, with the visa application process.
He also assured the family that the government would cover her full travel expenses and support efforts towards a dignified funeral.
Ghanaian officials in New York have also visited the bereaved family and are working with local authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death are thoroughly investigated.
The visa approval is expected to provide an opportunity for Javits’ mother to reunite with her family in the United States during this difficult period and personally say her final goodbye to her son.
The tragedy has sparked widespread sorrow among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, with growing calls for justice and improved safety for children in the Bronx.
