Martin Kpebu Takes Firm Position on Galamsey Debate, Urges Ghanaians to Support GoldBod

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has thrown his support behind the formalisation of artisanal mining in Ghana, describing the initiative as a positive step towards addressing challenges within the country’s small-scale mining sector.

Kpebu believes formalising artisanal mining offers a more sustainable approach to managing mining activities and could help move operators away from unregulated practices.

His endorsement comes amid ongoing national discussions about the government’s efforts to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and find lasting solutions to the environmental destruction associated with the practice.

According to the legal practitioner, formalisation is a good idea and represents the way forward for the country, particularly in its efforts to establish better control over artisanal mining operations.

He also called on the public to support the Ghana Gold Board, popularly known as GoldBod, in its efforts towards achieving the formalisation agenda.

His position highlights the importance of collective support for initiatives aimed at restructuring the artisanal mining sector and ensuring that mining activities are conducted within an organised and regulated framework.

The endorsement also adds to the growing conversation about the need to balance the economic importance of small-scale mining with the responsibility to protect Ghana’s natural resources.

Artisanal mining provides livelihoods for many individuals and communities across the country. However, activities carried out outside established regulations have contributed to serious environmental concerns, including the pollution of water bodies and damage to forest reserves.

Formalisation is therefore being considered an important approach to improving accountability, strengthening oversight and encouraging miners to operate legally.

Kpebu’s appeal for support for GoldBod suggests that addressing the challenges associated with artisanal mining requires cooperation from different sections of society.

While formalisation alone may not eliminate illegal mining, effective implementation, monitoring and compliance with mining regulations will remain essential to achieving meaningful results.

His endorsement adds another voice to the debate over how Ghana can reform its artisanal mining sector while protecting the environment and promoting responsible mining practices.

The focus now remains on ensuring that the formalisation effort translates into practical changes across mining communities.
