Matiang’i urged to drop presidential bid and support Ruto’s re-election
Renowned lawyer Danstan Omari has urged Jubilee Party leader Dr. Fred Matiang’i to shelve his 2027 presidential ambitions and instead support President William Ruto in the forthcoming General Election.
Addressing journalists in Kisii town, Omari said he was not asking Matiang’i to quit politics but to reconsider his presidential ambitions and support the incumbent president, arguing that such a move would benefit the Gusii community.
Omari said Matiang’i, being a son of the soil, should consider the interests of the Omogusii community at a time when other communities were benefiting from government development opportunities.
He warned that development projects earmarked for the region could be diverted elsewhere if local political leaders failed to align themselves with the current political establishment.
On voter numbers, the lawyer dismissed the argument that the Gusii voting bloc could independently determine the presidential outcome, noting that the region accounts for a relatively small proportion of registered voters compared to the rest of the country.
Omari also defended the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), describing it as a national party with a presence across the country.
Responding to criticism from politicians who have branded him a betrayer of the Gusii community, Omari argued that Matiang’i was losing political allies, singling out Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, who has joined the Linda Mwananchi Movement as treasurer under party leader Edwin Sifuna.
He further pointed to Matiang’i’s absence, alongside Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, from the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement, where other political principals were reportedly invited.
Omari interpreted their absence as an indication that the two leaders were not part of the political consultations surrounding the movement’s presidential ambitions.
He also cited visits by various political delegations to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence, noting that Matiang’i had not been among those who visited.
Omari said these developments should prompt Matiang’i to reconsider his political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
