Mamdani And Trump Intervene To Secure Visa For Slain Ghanaian Teen’s Mother

According to a report by Graphic Online on October 31, 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and United States President Donald Trump have intervened to facilitate an immediate visa for the mother of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot in the Bronx.

The intervention will allow the grieving mother to travel from Ghana to the United States to attend to her son’s final arrangements and say goodbye to him in person.

Mayor Mamdani announced the development on Saturday after speaking with President Trump, who agreed to facilitate the visa. He said the mother deserved the opportunity to see her son for the last time despite the distance separating them.

Javits Frimpong was shot on Thursday morning while walking to school in the Bronx. Police have identified three teenage boys as suspects in connection with the killing, but they remain at large.

The teenager’s death has sparked concern among residents and community members, with religious leaders, relatives and other members of the public gathering in the Bronx on Friday to remember him. The gathering included prayers and appeals to young people to reject violence that continues to claim the lives of children in the community.

Frimpong’s father, Thomas, disclosed that his son had experienced bullying at school and that those allegedly involved had recently been suspended. He also revealed that he brought the teenager from Ghana to New York about a year ago in search of better opportunities.

Meanwhile, the New York City Department of Education has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and school community. The department said counselling and other support services would be made available to affected students, families and staff while supporting police investigations.

The intervention by Mamdani and Trump is expected to help the bereaved mother overcome the immediate travel barrier and join her family in mourning the tragic loss.
