Kakamega Headteacher Breaks Down After Identifying Wife Among Six Accident Victims
A Kakamega teacher has been left devastated after losing his wife in a tragic road accident along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway.
Geoffrey Andabwa, a headteacher at a comprehensive school in Malava, Kakamega County, said he was heartbroken after identifying his wife’s body at a mortuary in Eldoret.
His wife was among six people from Mateta village who died on Friday night after a lorry collided with two vehicles at Coromat along the highway.
The victims were travelling to Nairobi to attend a wedding. Three of those who died were teachers, while five were women.
According to Andabwa, his wife had completed her duties overseeing national examinations before travelling with her colleagues. The group reportedly left on Friday afternoon at around 4pm.
He became worried after his wife stopped answering her phone. The wedding hosts later contacted him, asking whether he had spoken to her because she and her colleagues were not picking up their calls.
Shortly afterwards, he received information that the vehicle they were travelling in had been involved in an accident and that some victims had been taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Andabwa rushed to the hospital hoping to find his wife among the injured. However, she was not in the emergency department.
He later went to the mortuary, where he identified her body among the victims. “I am really sad and devastated after viewing my wife’s lifeless body. She left home alive,” he said, struggling to hold back tears.
Police Investigate Fatal Accident. A family friend, Amunga Wasilwa, confirmed that the accident had affected several families in Mateta village. He said a married couple was among those who lost their lives.
Witnesses claimed the lorry lost control as the driver attempted to avoid a fuel tanker that had broken down along the highway.
The lorry, which was travelling from the Nakuru direction, reportedly rammed into a Toyota Noah and a Toyota Probox before overturning about 100 metres from the scene.
Police launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident. The wreckage of the two vehicles was taken to Taraka Police Station as investigations continued.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani urged motorists to observe traffic rules and exercise caution, particularly as the festive season approaches.
The accident happened exactly three months after another crash along the same highway claimed seven lives.
