How Much Philimon Kipchumba Will Pocket After Historic Istanbul Marathon Victory

Kenyan long distance runner Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba has secured a major financial reward after winning the 48th edition of the Istanbul Marathon in Turkey on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

Kipchumba produced an impressive performance to cross the finish line in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 44 seconds, securing victory while setting a new course record.

The Kenyan shaved one full minute off the previous record of 2:09:44, which had been set in 2019 and had remained unbeaten in subsequent editions of the race.

His remarkable performance not only secured him the top position but also earned him an additional financial reward for breaking the course record.

According to TUKO.co.ke, Kipchumba is expected to pocket approximately KSh 7.1 million from his Istanbul Marathon triumph.

The amount comprises approximately KSh 6.4 million in prize money for winning the men’s elite race, alongside an additional USD 5,000, equivalent to roughly KSh 650,000, for setting a new course record.

The race, which covered the traditional 42.195 kilometre marathon distance, began on the Asian side of Istanbul, near the July 15 Martyrs Bridge.

Athletes then crossed the iconic Bosphorus Strait into Europe before completing the race at Sultanahmet Square.

Kipchumba faced strong competition, particularly from Ethiopia’s Sufaro Woliyi Kebeto, who finished second in 2:08:54, just 10 seconds behind the Kenyan.

Another Kenyan, Vincent Kipyegon Ronoh, completed the podium after finishing third, ensuring Kenya secured two of the top three positions.

Following the impressive performance, President William Ruto congratulated Kipchumba and Ronoh for their achievements.

In a message shared on social media, the Head of State praised Kipchumba’s course record victory, describing it as a demonstration of Kenya’s winning spirit and excellence in athletics.

He also commended Ronoh for securing third place, saying the two athletes had made the country proud.

Kipchumba’s victory adds to Kenya’s impressive reputation in international distance running, with the Istanbul performance particularly significant because of the course record and the substantial financial reward attached to it.
