Gachagua Vows to Arrest Joho, Other Suspected Drug Barons if Elected President

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to arrest Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho and other individuals he accuses of involvement in the illegal drug trade if he becomes Kenya’s next president.

Gachagua declared that his administration would take action against suspected drug barons, insisting that no individual would be protected because of their political influence, wealth or position in government.

By specifically mentioning Joho, the former Deputy President has brought one of President William Ruto’s senior Cabinet members into the centre of his latest political attack.

Joho, who previously served as Mombasa Governor for two terms, currently heads the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, a position he assumed in August 2024.

Gachagua’s remarks introduce the fight against drug trafficking into his political messaging ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the DCP leader promising a tough approach towards individuals he believes are involved in the trade.

His declaration also puts the spotlight on Joho, a prominent Coast politician whose name has featured in political discussions surrounding drug trafficking allegations.

However, the allegations against Joho should not be treated as established criminal wrongdoing, and any investigation or prosecution would have to follow the law.
