Family Makes Disturbing Discovery After Missing Daughter’s Phone Is Answered Beneath Eastleigh Rubble

A family whose daughter went missing following the collapse of an 18-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, has revealed that her phone is still receiving calls beneath the rubble, raising hopes that she could be alive.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, October 31, Jude Rose Wanjiru said relatives had repeatedly called her missing daughter, Auerilia Wanjiku, with the calls connecting despite their inability to communicate with her.

Wanjiru explained that although one of her daughter’s phone lines was not working, another remained reachable. However, whenever they called, nobody responded, even though they could hear background sounds.

The family further revealed that they attempted calling her again on Saturday morning, with the call being answered. They claimed sounds of excavators operating at the collapsed building could be heard during the conversation.

The development has strengthened their hopes that Wanjiku could be among the 16 people still missing following the disaster. Her family believes she might be trapped beneath the massive pile of concrete and debris.

Wanjiru disclosed that the prolonged uncertainty had left the family traumatised, forcing relatives to make daily visits to the rescue site for nine days as they desperately awaited news about their daughter.

She also expressed emotional distress over reports that a woman had been discovered dead with her body dismembered, saying the development had made the family’s search for their missing relative increasingly painful.

The family has reportedly shared the phone details with disaster response teams, who forwarded the information to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Investigators are now examining the signals to establish their source.

Meanwhile, rescue teams were preparing to enter the tenth day of operations on Sunday, November 1, with plans to concentrate on the rear section of the building where more missing victims could be trapped.
