Eyebrows Raised as Lawyer Ahmednasir Questions Alleged Expensive Kalenjin Weddings Since Ruto Took Over

Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has sparked fresh debate after raising questions about the growing popularity of lavish weddings among Kalenjin families since President William Ruto took office in 2022, drawing comparisons with the grand celebrations witnessed during previous administrations.

In his remarks, Ahmednasir suggested that there could be an interesting connection between the communities hosting expensive weddings and the communities represented in State House.

He recalled how grand weddings became common among Kikuyu families during the presidencies of Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, with Kenyans regularly witnessing extravagant ceremonies featuring impressive decorations, expensive entertainment and lavish receptions.

However, he claimed that the trend appears to have changed since Ruto assumed power, arguing that Kikuyu weddings have become less extravagant while Kalenjin celebrations have taken lavishness to another level.

Ahmednasir jokingly questioned whether members of certain communities become more willing to spend heavily on weddings whenever someone from their community occupies the country’s highest office.

He also acknowledged that many Kenyans from other communities remain comfortable celebrating their marriages through modest ceremonies in local churches and primary schools, where guests are served simple refreshments.

His remarks followed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s congratulatory message to Faith Cheluget and Allan Wanderi following their wedding.

Murkomen quoted Proverbs 18:22, describing marriage as a blessing that brings favour from God, before wishing the newlyweds a lifetime of happiness and prosperity.

Ahmednasir’s observations have now opened another conversation about politics, wealth and social celebrations, with his question likely to generate mixed reactions across Kenya.
