Da Cruz Reveals Key Chiefs Star Still Struggling to Understand His Playing Style
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has admitted that striker Etiosa Ighodaro is still struggling to fully understand the team’s playing model, despite the technical team working hard to help him adapt.
The Nigerian forward joined Amakhosi with expectations of strengthening their attacking options and providing more competition in the final third. However, his integration into the team has not been as straightforward as some supporters might have expected.
Da Cruz believes Ighodaro has the potential to become an important player for the Soweto giants, but has made it clear that the striker still needs time to understand how the team wants to play.
Speaking about the forward, the French tactician explained that understanding the team’s tactical approach remains an important part of his development at Naturena.
“For the moment he lacks an understanding of our game model. We are working with him, and he could be another solution,” Da Cruz said.
The coach’s comments suggest that Ighodaro’s situation is not necessarily about his ability or quality as a striker but rather how quickly he can adapt to the team’s tactical demands.
Every coach has a particular approach to the game, and players are expected to understand their responsibilities both with and without the ball. For a new striker, this can take time, especially when adjusting to different attacking movements, pressing instructions and the overall style of play.
At Kaizer Chiefs, Da Cruz appears keen to ensure that every player understands his responsibilities before being given a bigger role in the team.
Ighodaro’s ability to become another attacking option could prove valuable as Amakhosi continue their campaign across domestic competitions. The club needs enough quality and depth in its squad to compete consistently, particularly when injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion become factors.
The Nigerian forward will therefore be hoping to make progress in training and convince the coaching staff that he can offer something different to the team’s attack.
Although Da Cruz has acknowledged that the striker is not yet fully comfortable with the team’s playing model, his comments also show that the technical team has not given up on him.
With more time, tactical guidance and opportunities on the pitch, Ighodaro could eventually become an important option for the Chiefs coach as the season progresses.
