Bawumia Is Flagbearer But Some People Can’t Make Headline Without Mentioning Agyapong’s Name—Oppong

According to a Facebook post on November 1, 2026, Political commentator Jennifer Oppong has criticised some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for repeatedly mentioning Kennedy Agyapong in discussions about Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

In a Facebook post, Oppong argued that Bawumia should be allowed to lead the party without supporters and political figures constantly bringing up the name of the former Assin Central MP in their public commentary.

She maintained that individuals who believe Bawumia has what it takes to become President should concentrate on promoting his candidacy rather than continuing to reference Agyapong, who contested him in the party’s presidential primary.

“Bawumia is the Flagbearer of the NPP but some of these people can’t make the headlines without mentioning Kennedy Agyapong’s name,” she wrote.

Oppong further challenged those who repeatedly invoke Agyapong’s name to focus on helping Bawumia achieve his presidential ambition instead.

“Just make Bawumia the president if you think you’re that relevant and stop mentioning the name of Kennedy Agyapong who is busy making money,” she added.

Her comments come amid discussions within the NPP following its presidential primary and preparations for the 2028 general elections, with questions surrounding party unity and the relationship between supporters of the various candidates remaining part of the political conversation.

Agyapong was among the prominent contenders in the NPP’s presidential primary, which Bawumia won to become the party’s candidate for the next general election.

Oppong’s post also featured a statement attributed to former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, who reportedly said he would have been declared persona non grata if Agyapong had won the NPP presidential primary.

The Latin expression persona non grata refers to a person considered unwelcome in a particular place or organisation.
