In a statement released on social media, the club declared it would “not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football” following Carragher’s comments regarding manager Unai Emery’s potential interest in the vacant head coach role at Manchester United.
The dispute stems from remarks Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast, where he argued that Emery would leap at the chance to coach a global giant again.
Addressing backlash from Villa supporters, Carragher stated there is a natural hierarchy in football before telling fans to “shut the [expletive] up,” adding that Aston Villa would never match the stature of Manchester United.
Carragher later defended his comments on social media and The Overlap Daily, claiming his directive to fans was made “in jest” after facing criticism for suggesting Emery might consider the move.
The 48-year-old Sky Sports and CBS pundit reiterated that his broader intent was to praise Emery as the premier manager in the league, explaining that any elite manager’s ego would drive them to test their limits at the highest level of European football.
