Thierry Henry Set to Attend Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs Soweto Derby in South Africa

French football legend Thierry Henry is set to bring additional international attention to South African football after confirming that he will attend the highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona striker is visiting South Africa as part of the Betway Premier Soccer League’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Henry, who serves as a Global Brand Ambassador for Betway, is expected to experience one of Africa’s biggest football rivalries when the Buccaneers take on Amakhosi at FNB Stadium.

His expected presence has generated excitement among football supporters, particularly considering his legendary status in the international game. Henry enjoyed an extraordinary playing career, winning major trophies with Arsenal and Barcelona while also helping France capture the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.

However, despite his extensive experience of football rivalries around the world, the French icon revealed that he has never personally witnessed the famous Soweto Derby.

Speaking about his upcoming experience, Henry admitted that he had heard plenty about the rivalry and was interested in seeing what makes the encounter special.

“I do understand the derby, but I have never seen this one. People told me about it. I am a good friend of Siya Kolisi. One thing I have been told is that rival fans sit together on this one,” Henry said.

His comments highlight one of the unique aspects of the Soweto Derby, where supporters of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs can sometimes be seen sitting alongside one another despite supporting opposing teams.

The rivalry between the two clubs is among the most recognised in African football, with millions of supporters following their encounters. Beyond the football itself, the derby represents a major part of South African sporting culture and regularly attracts attention from international audiences.

For Henry, attending the fixture will provide an opportunity to experience the atmosphere, passion and traditions surrounding the rivalry for the first time.

The occasion is also significant for the PSL as it celebrates three decades of professional football, using the anniversary celebrations to highlight the growth and international appeal of the South African game.

With the two Soweto giants preparing for another battle at FNB Stadium, Henry’s presence adds another exciting attraction to an already highly anticipated football occasion.

South African football supporters will certainly be interested to hear his thoughts after witnessing the famous Pirates and Chiefs rivalry firsthand.
