President Mahama Is Not Promoting, Endorsing Or Facilitating Galamsey In Any Way Or Form – Baidoo
The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has defended President John Dramani Mahama against allegations that his administration is supporting or encouraging illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in Ghana.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Baidoo insisted that the President had not promoted, endorsed or facilitated illegal mining in any form.
The lawmaker maintained that Mahama should not be linked to activities responsible for environmental destruction across the country. He also argued that the government’s position on tackling galamsey should not be misrepresented amid the ongoing political debate.
Emphasising his position, Baidoo stated, “President Mahama is not promoting, endorsing or facilitating galamsey in any way or form.”
His comments come amid continuing disagreements between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the handling of illegal mining.
Both political parties have faced criticism over their respective records in addressing the problem, with accusations and counter-accusations involving political figures and individuals allegedly connected to mining activities.
Galamsey remains a major environmental challenge in Ghana, with illegal mining contributing to the destruction of forest reserves, pollution of rivers and degradation of farmlands. These activities have also raised concerns about the safety of water resources and the long-term impact on affected communities.
Baidoo’s remarks represent his position in the ongoing debate over the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis. His defence of the President also comes as pressure continues to mount on authorities to strengthen enforcement and ensure accountability.
The fight against illegal mining remains a national concern, requiring coordinated efforts from government institutions, political parties, traditional leaders and law enforcement agencies.
