‘Stop talking nonsense’ – Debibi United CEO hits back at GoldStars boss Petros Koukouras over pitch criticism
Debibi United Chief Executive Officer Alexander Ababio has strongly criticised Bibiani GoldStars head coach Petros Koukouras following the Greek tactician’s comments about the club’s home pitch after their Ghana Premier League meeting.
Koukouras questioned the condition of the playing surface at the Debibi Presby Park after GoldStars suffered a 1-0 defeat to the league newcomers in their Matchday 7 fixture, controversially claiming the pitch was more suitable for growing cassava than playing football.
His remarks sparked a swift response from Ababio, who described the comments as disrespectful and unnecessary.
Speaking to Nhyira FM, the Debibi United CEO defended the club’s home ground and urged the GoldStars coach to focus on football rather than making what he described as reckless statements.
“If that’s how they grow cassava in his country (Greece), then I don’t know how they feed them,” Ababio said.
“He should think about his job and stop talking nonsense. It was a reckless and unreasonable statement.”
The exchange has reignited debate over the quality of playing surfaces in the Ghana Premier League, an issue that has repeatedly drawn criticism from both local and foreign coaches throughout the season.
Despite the controversy, Ababio insists Debibi United remain focused on achieving their primary objective of avoiding relegation in their debut top-flight campaign.
The Premier League newcomers have collected seven points from eight matches and currently occupy a place in the bottom three of the league table as they continue their fight for survival.
“Our target is to remain in the league despite our poor start to the season,” Ababio added.
Debibi United will be hoping to boost their survival hopes when they welcome Hearts of Oak to the Debibi Presby Park, with another positive result expected to lift confidence as they seek to establish themselves in the Ghana Premier League.
