Ruto Announces Plans to Promote 50,000 Kenyan Teachers in 2026/2027
Thousands of teachers across Kenya could benefit from a major promotion exercise after President William Ruto announced plans to increase promotion opportunities to 50,000 during the 2026/2027 financial year.
The announcement was made on October 5, 2026, during the World Teachersâ Day celebrations at Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi.
President Ruto said the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) had already advertised 34,016 promotion opportunities. He directed the commission to increase the number to 50,000 and promised that the government would provide additional funding.
The government has also doubled the budget for teacher promotions from KSh1 billion to KSh2 billion.
The announcement has raised hopes among teachers who have remained in the same job groups for several years while waiting for career advancement.
Ruto also said consultations on new Career Progression Guidelines had been completed by the TSC and teachersâ unions. The proposed guidelines were awaiting approval by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
However, teachers will still need to meet the commissionâs requirements to qualify for promotion. The announcement does not mean that every teacher will automatically receive a higher job grade.
The expanded promotion plan is expected to support career growth and improve opportunities within Kenyaâs teaching profession.
