Pirates claim 2-1 soweto derby victory over kaizer chiefs as Tshepang moremi makes the difference
TSHEPANG MOREMI FIRES ORLANDO PIRATES TO SOWETO DERBY VICTORY AS KAIZER CHIEFS SUFFER ANOTHER HEARTBREAK
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 31 OCTOBER 2026
Orlando Pirates have secured a massive 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium, extending their impressive unbeaten run in the Betway Premiership and dealing another painful blow to their biggest rivals.
The Buccaneers delivered an important performance in front of thousands of supporters, with Tshepang Moremi emerging as the match-winner after scoring the decisive goal in the second half.
The encounter started with both teams showing determination, but it was Pirates who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Yanela Mbuthuma. His attempt took an unfortunate deflection off Thabo Moloisane before looping over Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and finding the back of the net.
However, Amakhosi responded quickly and restored parity just six minutes later.
A Mfundo Vilakazi delivery caused problems for Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who failed to deal with the ball cleanly. Pule Mmodi reacted quickly and managed to poke the ball into the net, bringing Chiefs back into the contest.
Both sides went into the half-time break level at 1-1, setting up an exciting second half.
Pirates returned from the interval with renewed determination and found the breakthrough in the 55th minute. Moremi produced the decisive moment, finding the back of the net to restore the Buccaneers’ advantage and send their supporters into celebration.
The visitors continued pushing for another goal, with Oswin Appollis briefly believing he had extended their lead. However, his effort was ruled out for offside.
Moremi also missed a golden opportunity to put the result beyond doubt, giving Chiefs some hope of finding another equaliser.
Amakhosi attempted to fight their way back into the match, but their afternoon became even more difficult in the closing stages.
Defender Inacio Miguel received his second yellow card in the 90th minute and was subsequently sent off, leaving Kaizer Chiefs with ten players as the derby approached its conclusion.
The final whistle confirmed a crucial victory for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s Pirates, who continue to strengthen their position in the league title race.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat represents another frustrating chapter against their Soweto rivals. Amakhosi have now gone six consecutive league meetings without beating Pirates, increasing the pressure on head coach Fernando Da Cruz.
Despite receiving backing from the club’s leadership earlier in the week, the latest result will undoubtedly raise further questions about Chiefs’ progress.
Meanwhile, Pirates have every reason to celebrate after claiming another important derby victory and strengthening their championship ambitions
