NDC must accept same scrutiny it demanded under Akufo-Addo – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has challenged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept the same level of scrutiny and accountability it demanded from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In a Facebook post on Friday, October 30, 2026, the Effutu Member of Parliament accused the governing party of adopting what he described as double standards since returning to power, arguing that criticism of government decisions should not suddenly become unacceptable because the NDC now occupies the Presidency.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC spent eight years in opposition questioning government contracts, challenging appointments, scrutinising public expenditure and demanding answers about policy commitments.

He said the party had consistently presented such actions as necessary democratic oversight but now appeared to regard similar criticism as political persecution.

β€œThe NDC spent eight years teaching Ghanaians that questioning government was patriotism. Today, the same people appear offended that Ghanaians have taken those lessons seriously,” he stated.

The Minority Leader stressed that public office is a responsibility entrusted to elected officials and should not shield them from criticism.

β€œPublic office is not a personal possession; it is a public trust. Holding office does not grant anyone immunity from criticism,” he added.

His comments come amid the controversy surrounding the reported GHΒ’49.72 million expenditure on the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa.

The Minority has questioned alleged discrepancies in payment records and supporting documents, called for an independent audit and demanded the resignation of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. It has also threatened a vote of censure against the minister.

Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed that the Minority would continue examining government contracts, public spending and policy performance as part of its parliamentary oversight responsibilities.

He insisted that the standards of accountability demanded by the NDC while in opposition must remain applicable now that it is in government.
