Meet the young Kenyan farmer who has put Homa Bay on the world map

A young Kenyan farmer has earned international recognition after being named the 2026 United Nations in Kenya Person of the Year.

Boniface Otieno Owino, an agricultural innovator from Homa Bay County, becomes the first person under the age of 30 to receive the prestigious award.

According to the United Nations, Owino was recognized for transforming community-based agriculture through climate-smart farming practices.

His journey began in 2021 when he established his farm under the Cereal Growers Association. Since then, he has embraced modern agricultural techniques, including efficient irrigation, certified seeds, integrated pest management and soil conservation.

His efforts have helped improve agricultural production while promoting environmentally sustainable farming.

Beyond running his own farm, Owino has turned his success into an opportunity to empower others. His farm now serves as a demonstration center where fellow farmers and young people receive training and mentorship.

Working alongside UN Women Kenya, he also supports local farmers through access to seeds, fish fingerlings and agricultural knowledge.

The recognition highlights the growing contribution of young people to Kenya’s agricultural sector, which remains a major pillar of the country’s economy.

Owino’s achievement sends an important message to young Kenyans: agriculture is not merely a traditional occupation but also an opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic transformation.

His story demonstrates how determination, knowledge and community involvement can create lasting change.
