A painful family tragedy has emerged after a South Eastern Kenya University student was left to celebrate her graduation without her sister, Mercy, who died shortly before the important milestone following complications linked to drug-induced liver injury.

Mercy passed away on Friday, October 16, 2026, at around 10 a.m. at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where she had been receiving treatment after being referred to the facility 26 days earlier.

Her death came as a major blow to the family, who had remained hopeful that she would recover after showing signs of improvement during her hospital stay.

According to her sister, Mary Nduku, Mercy had been responding well to treatment, and at one point, the family believed she was almost ready to be discharged.

Mary had been among the relatives who stood by Mercy throughout her illness, together with their mother, brother and Mercy’s husband.

However, their hopes were shattered when her condition reportedly deteriorated, leading to her death despite the efforts made to save her life.

The family is now left with painful memories of the difficult days they spent at the hospital, hoping that their loved one would return home.

Mary’s graduation has also taken a different meaning following the loss. What was supposed to be a joyful family occasion became a difficult moment, with one of the people she would have wanted to celebrate with no longer alive.

In an emotional tribute, Mary described the close relationship she shared with Mercy, recalling how they had grown up together and supported each other through different challenges in life.

She thanked everyone who stood with the family during the difficult period, including those who offered prayers, encouragement and other forms of assistance as they sought medical help for Mercy.

Mary also made a heartfelt promise to take care of the children her sister left behind, saying she would raise them as her own with the support of their father.

“Rest, my sister. We’ve grown up together and endured all hardships together. You’ve fought a good fight. I will take care of your children. I loved you so much. Only God knows,” she wrote.
