Jomo Sono Praises Kaizer Chiefs Star Mduduzi Shabalala Ahead of Soweto Derby

Jomo Sono, one of South African football’s most respected legends, has thrown his support behind Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

The former Pirates striker praised the 22-year-old’s contribution to Amakhosi, arguing that his ability to create scoring opportunities makes him an important player despite criticism surrounding his performances in the final third.

Speaking to KickOff ahead of Saturday’s Betway Premiership showdown at FNB Stadium, Sono shared his thoughts on Shabalala’s performances and highlighted what separates him from other players.

Shabalala has attracted mixed reactions from football supporters, with some questioning his decision-making and effectiveness in front of goal. Critics have pointed to occasions when the midfielder rushes his passes or attempts difficult shots instead of choosing better options.

However, Sono believes the youngster offers something valuable to the team through his creativity and ability to open up opposition defences.

“What I like about Shabalala is that at least he creates chances. I would rather have a Shabalala who creates chances than a player who runs around the pitch for 90 minutes doing nothing, elokhu ebhuquza nje ungayiboni nento ayenzayo,” Sono said.

He explained that some footballers appear hardworking because they cover plenty of ground and finish matches with sweat-soaked shirts, but do not necessarily make meaningful contributions to their teams.

The former Orlando Pirates icon believes creating opportunities is an important quality that should not be overlooked when evaluating a player’s performance.

Sono also recognised the progress of other young players at Kaizer Chiefs, singling out Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba for their impressive qualities.

The football legend described Vilakazi as an exceptionally talented player and suggested that Duba also possesses the ability to trouble opposition defenders.

“Chiefs youngsters have come out on board, especially his teammate Mfundo Vilakazi — he is a hell of a good player. There is also Wandile Duba; he is also a problem that one,” he said.

Returning to Shabalala, Sono expressed confidence in the midfielder’s potential, describing him as an important part of the club’s future.

“But Shabalala, he is the future that boy. The only thing missing in his game is luck. You need luck in football to do it perfectly,” Sono added.

Sono’s endorsement has also added another interesting dimension to the build-up, particularly given his legendary association with Orlando Pirates.
