“I Believe Nkrumah Was Referring to People Like Me” – Mahama Makes Powerful Historical Reference
President John Dramani Mahama has invoked the legacy of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, recounting his famous words following the 1966 coup that removed him from power.
Mahama recalled that when Nkrumah was overthrown and facing difficult moments, he reportedly declared that although his opponents might have succeeded in getting rid of him, many more Kwame Nkrumahs would follow.
The President said he believes the late Ghanaian leader was referring to people like him when he made that statement.
“When Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown and was about to die, he said they might have gotten rid of him, but many more Kwame Nkrumahs would follow. I believe he was referring to people like me,” Mahama stated.
His remarks highlight the influence Nkrumah’s political ideas and legacy continue to have on Ghana’s political landscape decades after his removal from office.
Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence in 1957, remains one of the country’s most recognised historical figures. His administration pursued ambitious programmes aimed at industrialisation, infrastructure development, education and African unity.
However, his government was overthrown in a military coup on February 24, 1966, while he was on a state visit to China. He subsequently lived in exile in Guinea, where he served as co-president, until his death in 1972.
Mahama’s reference to Nkrumah suggests that he sees himself as part of a generation of political leaders inspired by the former President’s ideas and commitment to national development.
The statement is also likely to generate conversations about the relationship between Ghana’s current political leadership and Nkrumah’s enduring legacy.
For many Ghanaians, Nkrumah’s contribution to independence and his vision for Africa remain important subjects of national discussion.
Mahama’s comments have therefore brought renewed attention to the historical significance of Nkrumah’s words and the continuing influence of his political legacy on Ghana.
