Ghanaians Have Rejected NPP Before, But We Returned To Power–Afenyo-Markin
According to a report by MyNewsGh, on Saturday October 31, 2026, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has sought to reassure members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, insisting that the latest rejection by Ghanaian voters is not an entirely new experience for the party.
Speaking in an interview with German international broadcaster DW TV, the Effutu Member of Parliament reflected on the NPP’s political prospects after its electoral setback, arguing that the party has previously experienced similar defeats but managed to reorganise and return to government.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the NPP should not interpret its loss in the 2024 elections as the end of its political relevance, stressing that the party has gone through difficult electoral periods in the past and successfully worked its way back into power.
He maintained that Ghanaian voters have rejected the NPP on previous occasions, but such outcomes did not prevent the party from rebuilding its political strength and eventually securing another mandate.
“This is not the first time Ghanaians have rejected NPP,” Afenyo-Markin said during the interview.
His comments come at a time when the party is facing the task of assessing the factors behind its defeat in the 2024 elections and developing strategies to regain public confidence ahead of future electoral contests.
The NPP suffered a significant setback in the December 2024 general elections, losing the presidential race to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while also experiencing a reduction in its parliamentary representation.
The defeat triggered discussions within the party about its leadership, campaign strategy, internal organisation and the need to reconnect with voters across the country.
However, Afenyo-Markin’s remarks suggest that he believes the party’s history provides a basis for optimism, particularly given its previous ability to recover from electoral defeats.
He appeared to be encouraging party members not to lose confidence but instead to concentrate on rebuilding the NPP and addressing the concerns that contributed to its rejection at the polls.
His message also highlights the recurring nature of political competition in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, where both the NPP and NDC have experienced periods in opposition before returning to power.
For Afenyo-Markin, the immediate challenge facing the NPP is therefore not simply dwelling on its electoral defeat but learning from the experience, strengthening its structures and working towards winning back the trust of Ghanaian voters.
The Minority Leader’s comments have added to the ongoing conversation about the NPP’s future direction and its chances of staging another political comeback after the 2024 elections.
