Ghana, Burkina Faso trade about US$1bn annually – Trade Minister
Ghana and Burkina Faso conduct formal trade worth more than US$1 billion annually, Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has disclosed, highlighting the growing economic relationship between the two neighbouring West African countries.
The minister made the disclosure on Friday, October 30, 2026, when she represented Ghana as Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony of the 18th International Arts and Crafts Fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO 2026) in Burkina Faso.
According to Ofosu-Adjare, formal trade between the two countries exceeded US$1 billion in the previous year, providing a strong foundation for deeper economic cooperation, industrial development and increased investment opportunities.
She said Ghana was committed to strengthening its commercial relationship with Burkina Faso through a proposed bilateral trade and investment agreement designed to promote cross-border trade, industrial cooperation and value addition.
The minister identified several areas where both countries could expand collaboration, including handicrafts, agro-processing, shea production, cotton, leather manufacturing and agricultural value chains.
She also emphasised the need to improve border management, harmonise product standards and simplify procedures for transporting goods between the two countries. Such measures, she noted, would help reduce trade barriers and make cross-border business more efficient.
At the fair, Ghana is participating as Guest of Honour alongside Mali and Niger, showcasing products from all 16 regions of the country.
The exhibition features Ghanaian cultural and commercial products, including Kente, Adinkra items, fugu, Bolgatanga baskets, beads, pottery, leather goods and contemporary fashion.
Ofosu-Adjare further encouraged African artisans to move beyond producing crafts on a small scale and develop systems that can transform locally made products into commercially competitive goods for international markets.
She stressed the importance of connecting artisans to manufacturing, processing and distribution opportunities, arguing that African crafts must reach wider markets to generate greater economic benefits.
The proposed bilateral agreement is expected to provide a framework for expanding trade and investment ties, creating opportunities for businesses and strengthening economic cooperation between Ghana and Burkina Faso.
