Da cruz frustrated as chiefs struggle against pirates in closing stages of Soweto Derby

FERNANDO DA CRUZ LEFT FRUSTRATED AS KAIZER CHIEFS STRUGGLE AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES IN DYING MINUTES OF SOWETO DERBY

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 31 OCTOBER 2026

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz appeared visibly frustrated as his team struggled to find the urgency needed to rescue a result during the closing stages of their highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With just minutes remaining on the clock, Amakhosi were trailing 2-1 against their bitter rivals, leaving the technical team and supporters increasingly anxious as the possibility of defeat became more realistic.

A photograph circulating during the encounter captured Da Cruz watching from the sidelines as his players attempted to respond to the situation. The French coach appeared concerned by the lack of urgency in Chiefs’ attacking play, particularly with time running out and the pressure mounting.

The Soweto Derby is traditionally one of the biggest fixtures in South African football, and Saturday’s meeting carried enormous significance for both clubs. Beyond the three league points, bragging rights and the expectations of millions of supporters were also at stake.

For Chiefs, finding an equaliser became increasingly important as the match approached its conclusion. However, with Pirates protecting their advantage, Amakhosi needed to raise their tempo and make the most of every remaining opportunity.

Da Cruz had entered the derby hoping to build on the team’s recent progress, including their impressive Carling Knockout victory over TS Galaxy. That performance had provided encouragement ahead of the encounter, but facing Pirates presented a completely different challenge.

The Buccaneers, meanwhile, showed determination to protect their lead and move closer to securing another important victory over their Soweto rivals.

The situation also placed additional pressure on Da Cruz, who has faced scrutiny during his time in charge of the Naturena-based side. Expectations remain high among Chiefs supporters, who are desperate to see their club return to winning ways in major fixtures.
