Orlando Pirates Beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 To Move Top Of The Betway Premiership Table

Pirates Silence Chiefs To Move Top As Moremi Delivers Soweto Derby Heartbreak

Orlando Pirates have claimed the bragging rights in the latest Soweto Derby after defeating bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was more than just a memorable result for the Buccaneers. It also sent a strong message in the Betway Premiership title race, with Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men moving to the top of the standings after another important three-point collection.

For Kaizer Chiefs, however, the defeat was a painful setback. Amakhosi entered the encounter hoping to maintain their unbeaten league record, but their missed opportunities ultimately proved costly against a Pirates side that showed greater clinical finishing when it mattered.

The atmosphere inside FNB Stadium reflected the importance of the occasion, with supporters from both sides creating the familiar electric atmosphere associated with South Africa’s biggest football rivalry.

Chiefs started with attacking intent and created promising opportunities through Wandile Duba and Pule Mmodi. Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was called into action, particularly when Duba found himself through on goal but could not beat the experienced shot-stopper.

Despite Chiefs’ promising start, it was Pirates who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute.

Yanela Mbuthuma made his presence felt with a powerful attacking run before releasing an effort that took a deflection off a Chiefs defender and beat goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

Amakhosi responded six minutes later. Mfundo Vilakazi delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, but Chaine failed to hold on to it. Mmodi reacted quickly, collecting the loose ball and sending it into the net to make it 1-1.

The two Soweto giants went into the half-time break level, leaving supporters anticipating an equally competitive second half.

Pirates returned with renewed purpose after the restart and found the breakthrough in the 55th minute.

Thapelo Mokobodi exploited space behind the Chiefs defence during a quick attacking move. Instead of attempting to finish the opportunity himself, he picked out Tshepang Moremi, who calmly converted to restore the Buccaneers’ advantage.

The goal proved decisive as Chiefs struggled to find another equaliser despite pushing forward during the closing stages.

Pirates also had opportunities to extend their lead, but their finishing prevented the scoreline from becoming more convincing.

The Buccaneers remained organised defensively and protected their advantage until the final whistle, securing a valuable derby victory.

The result takes Pirates to 25 points from nine league matches, moving them above their title rivals and strengthening their position at the summit, at least until Mamelodi Sundowns complete their next fixture.

For Chiefs, the defeat represents their first league loss of the 2026/27 campaign under coach Fernando Da Cruz. It also leaves them with questions to address, particularly regarding their ability to convert promising opportunities into goals.
