A Boogie Remembers Slain Ghanaian Teen During Concert Performance

American rapper A Boogie wit Da Hoodie has joined the growing tributes to Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian student who was shot and killed in the Bronx, New York, after recently moving from Ghana to live with his father.

The Bronx-born musician paused his performance during a concert to remember the teenager, whose death has left family members and communities in both Ghana and the United States mourning.

In a video circulating on social media, a photograph of Javits appeared on a large screen as A Boogie addressed the audience. He explained that the teenager had moved from Africa to America about a year earlier before losing his life to gun violence.

“He just came here from Africa to America about a year ago, and he passed away due to a gunshot wound. So let’s give a moment of silence to him,” the rapper told the crowd.

The audience subsequently observed a moment of silence in honour of the deceased before the artiste continued with his performance.

Javits had reportedly been walking to DreamYard Preparatory School in the Claremont neighbourhood of the Bronx when he was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.

The teenager had moved from Ghana to the United States approximately one year before the incident to join his father, Thomas Frimpong.

His father later disclosed that Javits had experienced bullying at school. According to him, the school principal had suspended two students just days before the fatal shooting following a confrontation in which Javits was reportedly defending himself.

Meanwhile, the New York Police Department has launched a manhunt for three teenage suspects believed to be connected to the shooting. Their identities and the motive behind the attack have not been established in the information provided.

The killing has attracted condemnation from community leaders, activists and Ghanaian officials. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has also joined calls for justice.

A Boogie’s tribute has added another public voice to the mourning surrounding Javits’ death, highlighting the grief over the loss of a young Ghanaian whose move to America was meant to begin a new chapter of his life.
