Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings Calls for Stricter Discharge Rules at Mental Health Facilities
Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, has urged mental health facilities across Ghana to exercise greater caution when discharging patients, insisting that individuals who have not fully recovered should not be released into the care of their relatives.
Speaking on the matter, the Minister emphasized that premature discharge poses serious risks both to the patients themselves and to the communities they return to, and that facilities must prioritize full recovery before allowing patients to leave.
According to Agyeman-Rawlings, families are often ill-equipped to provide the specialized care that recovering mental health patients require, making it dangerous to hand over such responsibilities to relatives before patients are medically stable. She stressed that mental health institutions have a duty to protect patients and ensure that discharge decisions are based on thorough clinical assessments rather than convenience or pressure from families.
The Minister further noted that the welfare of mental health patients demands a coordinated approach involving healthcare professionals, families, and relevant authorities. She called on facility administrators to strengthen their discharge protocols and to work closely with caregivers to ensure that patients receive continuous support even after leaving the hospital. Where full recovery has not been achieved, she argued, continued institutional care or properly supervised arrangements should be preferred over simply releasing patients to relatives.
Her remarks highlight growing concerns about the treatment and rehabilitation of mental health patients in Ghana, where inadequate resources and limited access to professional care have often complicated recovery efforts.
Agyeman-Rawlings’ call adds to ongoing conversations about improving mental health services and safeguarding the rights and well-being of vulnerable patients. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that promote proper care and responsible management of mental health cases, urging all stakeholders to treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves.
