Why ODM Wants Kalonzo to Dump Opposition for Broad-Based Government

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have urged Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka to abandon the opposition camp and join the broad-based government led by President William Ruto.

The appeal was made during a widows’ welfare fundraiser in Maralal, Samburu County, where ODM leaders also condemned the heckling Kalonzo faced during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement headquarters in Nairobi.

One of the leaders questioned the growing hostility among opposition supporters, arguing that political disagreements between different groups were undermining efforts to work together.

“Kalonzo is a respected national leader who should not be subjected to hostile disruptions by political supporters. We have a situation where Linda Mwananchi opposes Wiper, Wiper opposes DCP, and DCP opposes others. Is that the kind of confusion opposition supporters want?” an ODM official asked.

The leaders argued that joining the broad-based government would give Kalonzo an opportunity to work with the administration rather than remain caught up in disagreements within the opposition.

They also defended ODM’s cooperation with President Ruto, saying the arrangement allows the party to participate in national decision-making and push for development projects.

During the meeting, the ODM delegation urged Samburu residents to support Ruto’s development agenda and second-term bid, presenting cooperation with the government as a way to advance local and national interests.

The leaders also announced preparations for a memorial service in honour of former ODM leader Raila Odinga, scheduled to take place at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi.

Their appeal to Kalonzo comes amid growing differences among opposition leaders over political strategy and the formation of a united front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
