Why Ghana Police Have Reportedly Arrested KNUST Lecturer Dr Cosmos Asante

A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Cosmos Asante, popularly known as Yaw Ampong, has reportedly been arrested by the Ghana Police Service over allegations that he falsely presented himself as a traditional chief.

According to reports circulating on social media, Dr Asante was taken into custody on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, on the KNUST campus.

The allegations against him relate to claims that he paraded himself as the Adumasahene and Mawerehene of Juaben, an act reportedly suspected to be contrary to Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759).

Reports suggest that although some members of the community recognise Dr Asante as a chief, the customary rites and procedures required to formalise his installation have allegedly not been completed.

Dr Asante is reportedly in police custody as investigations into the matter continue.

However, the circumstances surrounding his arrest and the specific allegations against him have not been officially confirmed by the police.
