Weather Alërt: Kenya Met Names 19 Counties Set to Experience Heavy Thunderstorms as El Niño Rains Lo
The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has warned residents in 19 counties to prepare for thunderstorms expected between Saturday, October 31, and Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as attention turns to the anticipated El Niño-influenced rainy season.
According to the latest five-day weather forecast, the affected counties are mainly in the Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the Nyanza region.
The counties expected to experience thunderstorms include West Pokot, Samburu, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Baringo, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho and Bomet.
Others are Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.
The weather agency expects afternoon showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in the affected areas, with rainfall patterns varying from one county to another.
The forecast comes as Kenya prepares for the October-November-December rainy season, which could bring increased rainfall to several parts of the country.
Residents have been urged to remain alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods. People are also advised to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms because of the risk of lightning strikes.
Motorists should exercise caution on roads during heavy showers because poor visibility and slippery surfaces can increase the risk of accidents.
Farmers are also encouraged to follow official weather updates to help them plan agricultural activities and protect their crops.
Although the anticipated rains could improve water availability and support farming, excessive rainfall may cause flooding, soil erosion and damage to infrastructure.
Kenyans should note that the forecast does not mean every location in the listed counties will receive the same amount of rainfall.
The latest advisory highlights the importance of monitoring daily weather updates as conditions change.
For more updates, residents can follow the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority’s official social media platforms and check its latest forecasts before travelling or undertaking outdoor activities.
