Vilakazi Explains How Da Cruz Is Changing His Game

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi has explained how his approach to the game is changing under head coach Fernando Da Cruz, particularly regarding his use of showboating and individual skills during matches.

The young attacking midfielder is known for his confidence on the ball, creativity and ability to entertain supporters with his technical qualities. However, as he continues to develop at senior level, Vilakazi appears to be placing greater emphasis on making decisions that benefit the team rather than focusing solely on individual expression.

His comments suggest that conversations with Da Cruz have helped him understand the importance of choosing the right moments to display his skills.

Vilakazi clarified that the Chiefs coach has not completely prohibited him from showboating. Instead, the message is about recognising when such actions are necessary and when a simpler approach would be more beneficial to the team’s performance.

Explaining his changing mentality, Vilakazi said:

“If it’s not necessary for me to do those things I shouldn’t. But he didn’t say that I shouldn’t ever do it. But even I have told myself that the team comes first.”

The midfielder’s explanation highlights his growing understanding of the responsibilities that come with playing for a major club like Kaizer Chiefs. While his technical ability remains an important part of his game, knowing when to release the ball, maintain possession or take on an opponent can make him more effective.

For Da Cruz, developing Vilakazi into a more complete footballer involves maintaining his natural creativity while improving his decision-making and tactical discipline.

The youngster’s willingness to prioritise collective success also reflects an important step in his development. As competition for places continues at Naturena, consistency and contribution to the team’s overall performance will remain important.

Vilakazi will be expected to build on these lessons as he looks to establish himself as a regular contributor for Amakhosi.
