“There’s No Dumsor in Ghana; Everyone Has Adequate Power” – Mahama Assures Ghanaians in Russia

According to a report by JoyNews on Friday October 30, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the country is no longer experiencing power outages, popularly known as dumsor. He said Ghana currently has adequate electricity to meet the needs of households and businesses across the country.

The President made this statement while addressing members of the Ghanaian community in Moscow, Russia. He explained that his government had taken important steps to address the financial challenges that previously threatened the country’s electricity supply.

According to President Mahama, his administration inherited approximately US$1.7 billion in outstanding debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The government also inherited unpaid obligations for gas supplied from the Jubilee Field and by ENI.

He explained that the situation had created serious challenges in the energy sector, with some power producers threatening to suspend electricity supply because of the unpaid debts.

However, President Mahama said his government had successfully cleared the outstanding debts owed to IPPs and had introduced a new payment arrangement to ensure that electricity suppliers receive their payments on time.

He stated that the government was now up to date with payments to the power producers. He added that any electricity supplied to the national grid would be paid for promptly.

The President further explained that a separate arrangement had been introduced to settle the remaining financial obligations. Under the arrangement, initial payments would be made, followed by additional payments as they become due.

President Mahama said these measures had helped restore confidence between the government and electricity producers while improving the stability of power supply.

He maintained that Ghana currently has enough electricity to serve the needs of the population and insisted that the country is no longer experiencing dumsor.
