Suliman Carrim’s Legal Team Seeks to Arrange Completion of His Madlanga Commission Testimony

North West businessman Suliman Carrim could soon return to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after his legal representatives reportedly contacted the inquiry to arrange for him to complete his outstanding testimony.

The development follows a directive from the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court requiring Carrim to make arrangements to conclude his evidence before the commission. However, the date and details of his anticipated appearance have not yet been confirmed.

Carrim was granted R100,000 bail on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, following his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October. His arrest was linked to allegations that he failed to comply with subpoenas requiring him to appear before the commission.

His bail conditions require him to contact the inquiry within 48 hours of his release to arrange his appearance. He must also surrender his passport to the investigating officer, comply with international travel restrictions and report regularly to the police.

Despite securing bail in the Pretoria case, Carrim has reportedly remained in custody because of a separate criminal matter being handled by the Musina Magistrates’ Court.

Carrim previously testified before the Madlanga Commission in March 2026, but his evidence remained incomplete. He subsequently missed further proceedings, citing medical reasons, leading to legal action over his failure to attend.

In August, commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga indicated that the inquiry would no longer pursue Carrim to testify in person and would instead consider his previous evidence.

The latest court directive has reopened the possibility of Carrim returning to address outstanding questions before the inquiry.

The commission was established to investigate allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system. Carrim’s potential return could help clarify unresolved issues, although his appearance remains subject to confirmation.

The allegations surrounding his failure to attend proceedings should not be treated as a finding of guilt.
