Sifuna Reacts to Ruto’s Recent Address, Reveals What He Expected the President to Announce — Details

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has criticised President William Ruto over his announcement that German football giants Bayern Munich will play in Kenya, questioning why the government has not given similar attention to Kenyans caught up in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking on Friday, October 30, during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, Sifuna expressed disappointment over the President’s recent announcement.

The senator said Kenyans had expected Ruto to address the situation of citizens who travelled to Russia seeking employment but reportedly ended up being recruited into the Russian military and sent to fight in Ukraine.

“We waited that RUTO will announce the Release of 1,000 Kenyans who are stuck in Ukraine-Russia war, kumbe anatuambia mambo ya BAYERN MUNICH,” Sifuna said.

His remarks come as concerns continue to grow over the fate of Kenyans recruited into the Russian military. Families of some of those affected have been calling for government intervention to secure the return of their relatives.

On October 29, reports indicated that Kenya had sent 841 recruits to the Russia-Ukraine war, with 76 reportedly killed. The figures have increased public concern over the recruitment of Kenyans into foreign military operations.

The issue has also attracted attention from other opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has called on the government to prioritise the safe return of Kenyans caught up in the conflict.

Ruto, who was in Moscow attending the Third Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, had earlier announced that Bayern Munich would face Ajax Amsterdam at the newly named Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5, 2027.

The match is expected to mark the stadium’s official opening.

Sifuna’s latest remarks have added to the political debate over the government’s priorities, with the senator questioning why the fate of Kenyans in the war has not received the same attention as the football announcement.
