PANIC AT STATE HOUSE: Raymond Omollo & UDA Hardliners Clash with ODM Over Power Split
ODM’s 50-50 Power-Sharing Demand Puts Ruto Talks to the Test as Raila’s Absence Deepens Party Rift
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is reportedly pushing for an equal 50-50 power-sharing arrangement with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), raising fresh questions about the future of their political cooperation ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
The demand has exposed growing disagreements within the broad-based government arrangement, with ODM leaders insisting that the party must be recognised as an equal partner rather than a junior ally in any political agreement.
According to the reports, prominent ODM figures, including National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, party leader Oburu Oginga and chairperson Gladys Wanga, have rejected what they describe as an unfair arrangement that could undermine the party’s influence.
The proposed formula would reportedly cover key areas of government, including executive appointments, diplomatic positions, leadership of state agencies and senior coalition positions. ODM’s demands are also said to include the deputy president’s position, highlighting the extent of the negotiations.
The party’s position reflects concerns among some members that ODM’s substantial political support should translate into meaningful representation in government. Delegates from Nyanza, Western and Coastal regions have reportedly echoed calls for firm guarantees before any coalition agreement is finalised.
However, meeting ODM’s demands could create difficulties for Ruto and his UDA allies. Original Kenya Kwanza supporters and incumbent leaders may resist an arrangement that would require the ruling party to share significant portions of its political influence.
On the other hand, rejecting ODM’s demands could strain relations between the two political formations and complicate efforts to build a united campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
The negotiations are unfolding amid questions about ODM’s internal direction following the absence of longtime party leader Raila Odinga, whose influence has played a significant role in shaping the party’s political strategy.
With competing interests threatening to widen existing divisions, the coming months could prove decisive for both parties.
Whether Ruto and ODM can agree on a formula that satisfies their respective supporters without destabilising their political partnership remains uncertain. For now, the reported 50-50 demand has emerged as a major test of their cooperation ahead of the next electoral contest.
