Shell Takes Action After Viral Video Shows Man Spraying Petrol Over His Car in Nairobi

A viral video showing a motorist dangerously pouring petrol over his vehicle at a Nairobi fuel station has prompted a strong response from Vivo Energy Kenya, the company behind Shell-branded fuel stations.

The incident reportedly happened on the night of Wednesday, October 28, at Shell Westview service station in Nairobi during a refuelling transaction.

The video circulating online shows a customer holding a fuel nozzle and spraying petrol over the top of his car while the fuel tank remained open.

The footage sparked concern among Kenyans, with many questioning how such dangerous behaviour could take place at a busy petrol station.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, Vivo Energy Kenya condemned the incident, describing the conduct as irresponsible and dangerous to public safety.

According to Nairobi Leo’s report published on October 30, 2026, the company warned that the actions captured in the video could endanger the lives of customers, employees and other people at the station.

Petrol is highly flammable, and careless handling can create a serious fire hazard, particularly in places where fuel vapour may be present.

The incident has renewed conversations about safety standards at fuel stations and the responsibility of motorists to follow instructions during refuelling.

Kenyans have also expressed concern over the risks posed by people who disregard basic safety precautions in public spaces.

The company has urged motorists to observe safety procedures when visiting its stations as the incident continues to attract attention online.
