Samson Adamu Makes History as First Nigerian to Become CAF General Secretary
According to Vanguard Newspapers on Friday, October 30, 2026, Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has made history after being confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). His appointment makes him the first Nigerian to occupy the important position in the organisation’s 70-year history.
The development is a major achievement for Nigeria and another moment of pride for the country’s football community. Adamu’s confirmation was announced on Thursday, October 29, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) immediately congratulating him on the historic appointment.
The NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, described the development as good news for Nigerian football administration. He expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to perform well and represent both Nigeria and Africa positively.
Ikpeme also promised that the NFF would provide the necessary support to help him succeed in his new responsibility.
Adamu is not new to football administration, as he has built considerable experience working with CAF over the years. He initially joined the continental football governing body as its Director of Competitions before later becoming the Director of Tournaments and Events.
On March 29, 2026, he was appointed acting General Secretary following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese football administrator.
His confirmation as the substantive General Secretary now gives him full responsibility for the position.
Adamu also holds a FIFA Master’s degree in the management, law and humanities of sport. Before joining CAF, he began his journey in football administration by establishing the now-defunct Copa Lagos beach soccer tournament in the early 2010s.
As General Secretary, he will play an important role in overseeing CAF’s daily administrative activities and ensuring that decisions made by the organisation’s leadership are properly implemented.
CAF is responsible for organising major African football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the CAF Champions League and other continental tournaments.
Adamu’s achievement is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s representation in the administration of African football.
For Nigerian football supporters, his appointment is an encouraging development, especially as the country continues to seek greater recognition in international football leadership.
His new position will provide an opportunity to contribute to the growth, organisation and development of football across the African continent.
