THE mysterious death of 36-year-old Waseema Marcus, a Manenberg mother of three whose body was discovered inside her home on Monday afternoon, has left her family and community devastated as police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Marcus was found at her residence in Thames Avenue, Manenberg, on 26 October 2026, at approximately 2pm, after concerns were raised when she failed to visit her mother as part of her daily routine.

According to a source familiar with the discovery, Marcus was found lying on a bed in an unusual position, with her feet resting on a chest of drawers.

“The way she was found in her house there was no blood and no bruises,” the source said, adding that her body appeared swollen.

The source explained that Marcus visited her mother every morning to prepare food and assist her with daily activities.

When she failed to arrive, her mother reportedly became concerned and sent someone to check on her, leading to the discovery.

The source also alleged that Marcus’ husband had been seen standing at a distance as people gathered at the residence.

According to accounts from the scene, he reportedly left following the discovery of his wife’s body and could not be located afterwards.

Marcus’ father-in-law subsequently confirmed to the Daily Voice’s sister publication, Cape Argus, that his son was found to have been admitted to hospital.

The circumstances surrounding his hospitalisation remain unclear, and police have not indicated that he is suspected of wrongdoing.

Marcus leaves behind three young boys aged 5, 12 and 14.

Community activist Yumnah Alexander described Marcus as a sweet and kind woman whose death was a devastating loss to her family and community.

“Waseema was truly sweet, kind and she leaves three young boys behind,” Alexander said.

She added that Marcus had also been caring for her father-in-law and mother, who both live with disabilities and were dependent on her.

Alexander described her death as a great loss for the family and community.

She urged residents to speak out when they notice concerning behaviour, particularly where gender-based violence may be suspected.

“When you see something, you’ve got to say something. We cannot still be living in an era of minding our own business,” Alexander said.

However, police have not confirmed whether Marcus’ death is linked to gender-based violence or criminal activity.

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that an inquest had been registered following the discovery.

“Manenberg police registered an inquest for investigation after the body of a 36-year-old female was found at a residence on Thames Avenue, on Monday, 26 October 2026, at about 2pm,” Twigg said.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”

Police have not disclosed whether any suspicious circumstances have been identified.
