Kalonzo Rejects Sifuna Deputy Deal as Hassan Omar Alleges What Happened

Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reportedly rejected a proposal to serve as a deputy under Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, insisting that he should be the presidential candidate or risk jeopardising the emerging opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The claims were made by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Hassan Omar, who suggested that disagreements over coalition leadership could complicate efforts to unite opposition leaders seeking to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.

According to Omar, Kalonzo was allegedly offered a deputy position in an arrangement that would also guarantee his political camp a 30 per cent stake in government. However, the former Vice President reportedly rejected the proposal, maintaining that he should lead the coalition as its presidential candidate.

Kalonzo has long maintained his presidential ambitions, drawing on his experience in national politics and his service as Vice President under retired President Mwai Kibaki. His supporters believe his political experience and established presence in opposition politics make him a strong contender to lead a united opposition coalition.

The reported proposal involving Sifuna adds another dimension to the ongoing discussions about who should represent the opposition in the presidential race. Sifuna has emerged as an influential figure amid changing political alignments and growing debate about alternative leadership ahead of 2027.

However, Omar’s claims have not been independently confirmed through a direct statement from Kalonzo or his representatives. The alleged offer, the proposed government arrangement and Kalonzo’s reported response should therefore be treated as unverified claims rather than an established coalition agreement.

The reported disagreement highlights the challenges opposition leaders face in balancing individual presidential ambitions with the need to build a united political front. Negotiations over leadership positions, power-sharing arrangements and the presidential ticket could determine whether the emerging alliance remains intact.

With the 2027 elections approaching, opposition leaders will need to find common ground if they hope to present a formidable challenge to Ruto. Whether Kalonzo and other political figures can reach a compromise remains uncertain, but Omar’s remarks have placed coalition leadership at the centre of the unfolding political debate.
