This after explosive allegations of interference with investigations came under the spotlight at the Madlanga Commission.

Former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) boss Advocate Andrea Johnson and ex-SAPS Major-General Feroz Khan were arrested on Friday, 30 October, on defeating the ends of justice charges.

The arrests follow warrants that were reportedly authorised on Thursday, 29 October.

Police are yet to confirm the arrests, but National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokeswoman Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that “the matter of the former IDAC boss is appearing at the Pretoria Magistrates Court”.

The pair’s reported arrests follow months of testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where witnesses raised serious questions about their conduct, the handling of confidential evidence, and alleged interference in criminal investigations.

Johnson has been under scrutiny over a 2018 assault and intimidation complaint involving Khan and former Crime Intelligence Brigadier Manana Leonora Phetlhe.

Retired Hawks Colonel Kobus Roelofse and former IDAC official Advocate Drushantha Ramsamy made allegations about Johnson’s handling of the matter.

Roelofse testified that Johnson, who was an NPA prosecutor at the time, allegedly shared confidential information from the investigation with Khan before he submitted his warning statement.

The material allegedly included Phetlhe’s statement, a J88 medical report, and an audio recording.

According to the testimony, Khan received the information a day before he was due to give his warning statement to investigators.

Johnson was also accused of shielding Khan from prosecution and arranging an unofficial meeting at her office, bypassing normal visitor procedures.

Questioned at the commission about whether she had disclosed the docket, Johnson invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination.

But the allegations against the former IDAC boss didn’t end there.

Ramsamy, who worked under Johnson, gave testimony about her former superior’s management of investigations.

She alleged Johnson pressured officials over investigations involving senior police figures and gave instructions that could have compromised investigations.

In one particularly serious allegation, Ramsamy told the commission Johnson advised her to leave the country if she was summoned to testify.

The commission heard a recording of a telephone conversation between the two, made on 26 July.

Ramsamy also alleged that Johnson instructed the investigation team not to inform national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola about certain investigations before he appeared before Parliament’s police portfolio committee.

The alleged plan, according to Ramsamy, was to allow Masemola to give an incorrect account before Parliament and potentially face a perjury charge.

Khan, meanwhile, has faced questions about his conduct in several controversial police operations, including the 2021 Aeroton cocaine bust in Joburg.

The operation involved a massive cocaine seizure, reported in different accounts as 751kg, and allegations that Khan interfered with the work of officers at the scene.

Witnesses told the commission about alleged interference in the operation, including claims that a K-9 unit was prevented from searching for a warehouse.

The commission also heard about discrepancies surrounding the quantity of cocaine seized.

A WhatsApp message in which Khan reportedly referred to 552kg was questioned against official evidence reflecting a 541kg seizure.

These allegations have been added to the scrutiny surrounding the former Crime Intelligence deputy head and his role in police operations.

The reported arrests of Johnson and Khan now bring the allegations into sharper focus as the criminal justice system moves to deal with matters raised during the commission’s proceedings.
