We Are The Champions— Pirates Official Drops Aggressive Derby Vow That Will Enrage Chiefs Fans

Merafe Sends Strong Message Ahead of Orlando Pirates’ Soweto Derby Clash Against Chiefs

Orlando Pirates are heading into the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs with confidence, and club official Floyd Merafe believes the Buccaneers have every reason to approach the encounter with belief.

The Buccaneers have enjoyed an impressive run of form, building momentum through their performances and establishing themselves as one of the teams to watch in South African football this season.

Their recent displays have strengthened the belief within the club that they can continue delivering positive results, although the upcoming meeting with their biggest rivals presents a different kind of challenge.

The Soweto Derby is one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar, with both clubs understanding the importance of producing a strong performance in front of their passionate supporters.

For Pirates, the encounter carries additional significance because they enter the match as the reigning Betway Premiership champions. That achievement gives the team confidence, but it also brings expectations from supporters who want to see the club maintain its high standards.

Speaking ahead of the eagerly anticipated showdown, Merafe acknowledged the importance of the occasion while expressing satisfaction with the team’s recent performances.

“We go into this Soweto Derby as the champions of the Betway Premiership, and that holds its own weight. Obviously, we’ve had an amazing run,” Merafe said.

His remarks underline the confidence surrounding the Pirates camp as they prepare for another demanding encounter against their traditional rivals.

However, Merafe understands that previous achievements will not automatically guarantee success against Kaizer Chiefs. The Soweto Derby is known for its intensity, unpredictability and emotional significance, making it a fixture where form can sometimes count for very little.

The latest statistics certainly favour the Buccaneers. Pirates have collected seven victories and one draw from their opening eight league matches, leaving them second on the standings with 22 points, just one behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

They also head into the encounter on the back of a five-match winning streak in the league. Their latest victory was a convincing 3-0 triumph over TS Galaxy, further strengthening their confidence ahead of the derby.

Chiefs, meanwhile, will be determined to challenge their rivals after recording a 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup. The result provided a timely confidence boost for Fernando Da Cruz’s team.

The two Soweto giants will meet at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30. The encounter is expected to attract enormous attention from football supporters across the country.

For Pirates, the objective will be to maintain their impressive momentum and strengthen their position in the title race. For Chiefs, defeating their biggest rivals would provide a major statement and an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding their season.

Merafe’s confidence reflects the belief within the Pirates camp, but the Buccaneers know that they must deliver on the pitch when the pressure is at its highest.

With bragging rights, league points and enormous expectations at stake, another memorable Soweto Derby could be on the cards.
