Interior Ministry Tops Government Performance Rankings as Trade Ministry Ranks Last
byMavis FanteviOctober 30, 20260 The Ministry of the Interior has emerged as the best-performing government ministry in Ghana, while the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has ranked last in a new assessment of 23 ministries.
The rankings are contained in the Index of Government Institutions’ Performance Towards Economic Prosperity (IGIPTEP), developed by the Africa Centre for Entrepreneurship and Youth Empowerment (ACEYE) in partnership with Atlas Network.
The index assesses the performance of government institutions and how effectively their operations contribute to economic prosperity.
According to the findings, the Ministry of the Interior ranked first with a score of 80.26 per cent, placing it in the index’s very high performance category.
The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, however, placed 23rd with 48.08 per cent, making it one of only two ministries that scored below 50 per cent.
The Ministry of Transport ranked 22nd with 49.6 per cent, narrowly outperforming the Trade Ministry.Overall, 21 of the 23 ministries assessed scored above 50 per cent, suggesting that most of the institutions performed above the index’s halfway mark.
The difference between the highest and lowest-ranked ministries was 32.18 percentage points, highlighting significant variations in institutional performance.
The assessment places emphasis on key areas such as public service delivery, workforce efficiency and financial management, which are considered essential to the effective functioning of government institutions.
It also provides a comparative benchmark for ministries to evaluate their operations, identify weaknesses and strengthen their administrative systems.
While the Interior Ministry’s performance places it ahead of the other institutions assessed, the low scores recorded by the Trade and Transport ministries point to areas that may require attention.
However, the rankings do not establish the specific factors responsible for the performance of individual ministries.
Further examination of the assessment’s indicators and methodology would be necessary to understand the reasons behind the differences.
The findings have renewed attention on the need for improved institutional efficiency, accountability and effective management of public resources to support Ghana’s economic development.
