I Came to This Hotel in China, and They Refused to Let Me Check In Because I’m Black β€” Ghanaian Man

A Ghanaian man has accused receptionists at a hotel in China of denying him accommodation because of his race, claiming that he was prevented from checking in after being told that the facility was reserved exclusively for Chinese people.

The man, whose experience has raised concerns about the treatment of foreign visitors, recounted how he arrived at the hotel expecting to secure a room but was allegedly turned away by the reception staff because of his African background.

In describing the incident, he expressed disappointment over the treatment he received, insisting that his skin colour was the reason the hotel employees refused to provide him with accommodation despite his attempt to check in.

β€œI came to this hotel in China, and they refused to let me check in because I’m Black, they said it’s only for Chinese people,” he stated.

According to his account, the receptionists made it clear that the hotel was not willing to accommodate him because he was not Chinese, leaving him unable to proceed with his intended stay at the establishment.

The allegation has brought attention to the experiences of African travellers who visit foreign countries for business, tourism, education and other personal reasons, particularly when they encounter situations in which they believe they are being treated differently because of their race or nationality.

Hotels and other hospitality businesses are generally expected to provide services to customers without unfair discrimination, while ensuring that their accommodation policies comply with the laws and regulations governing their operations.

For international visitors, access to suitable accommodation is an important part of travelling, and being denied a room on the basis of skin colour can create an uncomfortable experience, particularly for individuals who have travelled long distances and expect to receive the same professional treatment as other guests.

The Ghanaian man’s account also raises questions about the policies applied by the hotel and whether foreign guests are permitted to use its services, although his allegation has not independently established the establishment’s official position.

His experience has once again placed the issue of racial discrimination in hospitality settings under scrutiny, especially in situations where visitors believe that their identity or appearance has influenced the services made available to them.

The allegation leaves questions about the treatment of foreign guests at the particular establishment, while the man’s account centres on his claim that he was denied the opportunity to check in simply because he is Black.
