Ghana Premier League talent still there, but players must work harder – Bernard Don Bortey

Former Hearts of Oak star Bernard Don Bortey believes the quality of players in the Ghana Premier League has not dropped.

According to the former GPL cult hero, the current generation must show more courage and determination to reach the next level.

The former Ghana international has shared his thoughts on the standard of football in the ongoing 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, comparing today’s players with those from his playing days.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Don Bortey argued that there is little difference in the quality of players across both generations, but believes many current players lack the hunger to push themselves further.

β€œThe quality of players in the GPL today is the same as it was during our time. The difference is that the current generation is afraid to push harder,” Don Bortey said.

Don Bortey played for Hearts of Oak from 2001 to 2010, where he became one of the club’s most popular and respected players.

He also featured for Aduana FC, New Edubiase United and Great Olympics, proving himself as one of the best players of his generation.

Although some Ghana Premier League fans believe the quality of players in the league has dropped, Don Bortey disagrees. He believes the league still has talented players.
